Ypsilanti Township to Consolidate Several Precincts for May 6th Election

A proposed point-seven mill tax to increase Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority service is the only issue on the May 6th ballot in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Ypsilanti Township.  To save the A-A-A-T-A some money Ypsilanti Township officials will be combining several precincts to limit the number of poll workers needed.

Ypsilanti Township Clerk Karen Lovejoy Roe says this type of consolidation is typical for odd year elections that generally have lower turnout than when we're choosing a president or governor.  Nearly all voters will cast ballots in their normal polling place because the consolidated precincts are co-located in big elections.

Roe notes a pair of precincts are making a permanent move starting this spring.

In addition to saving money because fewer poll workers are needed she thinks it's easier to administer elections with fewer precincts.

More information on the Ypsilanti Township precinct consolidation is here.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
