Ann Arbor Mayor John Hieftje believes the Leslie Science and Nature Center is a great example of efforts to make the city more green.  Tonight he'll host the 14th annual Mayor's Green Fair

Over 100 environmental friendly and green exhibits will take over Main Street from 6 to 9 tonight.

Hieftje believes the city has benefited in many ways from the philosophy that's led to energy efficiency. He says the same energy conservation concepts when applied to city government helped Ann Arbor get through the recession.

Hieftje says a lot of work has been done but much remains in greening the city.  Some of the biggest challenges include trying to deal with the GelmanDioxane Plume, continuing Huron River clean-up efforts, and dealing with stormwater.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
