U-S Representative Gary Peters brought his campaign for Senate to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan Thursday.  He's highlighting his stance on a couple of higher education issues.

Peters met with researchers at the University of Michigan using stem cells to find cures to Lou Gehrig's and Alzheimer's Disease. The Democrat believes his stance on embryonic stem cell research sets him apart from Republican Terri Lynn Land. She supports using only adult stem cells for this work. Peters says doing more to promote science will help Michigan universities make the state a world leader in medical research.

He also has pushed legislation to help college graduates pay off student loans. "We've got 25 million people that could benefit right now from refinancing their student debt and that's good for the economy. Not only is it good for their families, it's great for the economy, because instead of paying student debt interest rates they could use that money to buy a car, buy a new home, to rent an apartment," Peters says.

Defaults on student loan debt could also be cleared from an individuals credit report under Peters' legislation.

Peters and Land are fighting for the seat Carl Levin has held since 1978.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
