Meet The Ann Arbor School Board Candidate: Don Wilkerson

Don Wilkerson

The Ann Arbor School Board will have a new look after next month's election.  Ten Candidates are running for four seats on the board.  While I will interview all of the candidates, Don Wilkerson is the focus of today's report.

The turn-around of NorthsideElementary as a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math focused school inspired Don Wilkerson to run for school board.  He says SuperintendentJeaniceSwift was the first one to really listen and take actions to reinvigorate the school.

Wilkerson wants the district to expand these types of efforts to schools across the district. "Families can't commuter or can't commute across the district, and we shouldn't expect them to.  You know, we can't have select schools that have innovative, engaging programming, but we really need to find ways for everybody to be able to share in them," Wilkerson says.

Wilkerson thinks his finance and accounting skills combined with a broad based approach to improving the district would help the school board.  He wants the district to seek revenue growth through better leveraging of assets and improved communication to better engage the community.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
