North Maple Estates

Ann Arbor Housing Commission to place 42 new units.

Ann Arbor Housing Commission has secured the most crucial piece of funding needed to move forward with the replacement of housing at North Maple Estates. The project, will cost about $10 million, and demolition work is scheduled to begin this summer. Ann Arbor was recently awarded low-income housing tax credits, which should generate about $8 million.

Executive Director, Jennifer Hall, says progress is being made to fill the remaining gap. Hall stated the project has "a $350,000 grant from HUD through the county, and we received $700,000, a little over $700,000, from the city of Ann Arbor."

Current residents will be given vouchers to subsidize rent in the private sector, or they can move to other housing commission properties during construction. The project is expected to run through early 2017.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
