Michigan’s presidential primary is Tuesday, March 8 and in the remaining days Republican and Democratic candidates are holding events in Ann Arbor and Detroit. Last night Fox News held a GOP debate at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
Washtenaw County Republican Party member Howard Morris was in the audience. He says, despite a number of personal attacks between the candidates, there was more on the issues than in previous debates.
Morris is a longtime Republican and owner of Morris Creative Services in Saline. He was at the Fox Theatrefor the GOP debate and says he’s pleased that the candidates revealed more details about their policy goals if elected to the Oval Office. "There was more specificity, there was more intelligent dialog," Morris says. "Even when there was sparring on personal items going back and forth it seemed to be rooted in real character issues that bear weight on the presidency."
Only a few minutes of the 2-hour debate directly addressed specific issues in Michigan. Morris says one national concern has also become a important locally in the aftermath of the Flint water crisis.
He says,
“A lot of these comments really brought it home to that Detroit audience when speaking about the role of the federal government in helping real people.”
Hundreds of protesters rallied in the snow and rain outside the Fox Theatre. It was the 11th GOP debate this campaign season.
Democratic candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton will debate Sunday night at the Whiting Auditorium in Flint.
