The current unemployment rate in Michigan is about 4.8%. It's lower in Washtenaw County.
Nearly 6,000 people in Washtenaw County are considered long term unemployed individuals because they haven't worked for more than 27 weeks.
Washtenaw County's unemployment rate is 3%, but Shamar Herron, who is the workforce development manager for Michigan Works, says that number could be deceptive. He says the county's east side alone has a 17% unemployment rate.
To help with the problem, Michigan Works offers job fairs as well as training to get people back to work.
