School's Out And The Report Card Is In For Ypsilanti Community Schools

Lisa Barry

School is out for most of Michigan, but many local school officials are still hard at work determining what's next for their district.

For some, that means looking for ways to improve the bottom line.

I spoke with Ypsilanti Community Schools' Superintendent Dr. Benjamin Edmondsonabout how his district is looking after his first year on the job.

Edmondson says YCShas "improved drastically" over the last year, but there's still room for improvement.

He says student enrollmentremains a concern, and they are projecting it to decline next year.

"We are a school district surrounded by charter schools and surrounded by choice," Edmondson says.

Declining enrollment has also lead the district to be "overstaffed," according to Edmondson and forced the district to lay off between 10 and 12 teachers.
