Departing Council Member Briere Hopes Successor Will Settle Library Lot Debate

Ann Arbor's city council is expected to appoint a new 1st ward council member tonight.

The selection is scheduled to take place toward the end of a work session, after city council member Sabra Briere resigns to move to California.

Briere, who has served on council for nine years, says the new member could be the deciding vote on whether or not the Library Lot deal gets approved.  That's the controversial plan that would sell the city-owned land to a high-rise developer.

"That's a terrible position to put someone in who's not been part of the process."

Briere was on the fence about the project.

Seven candidates were interviewed last week for the position.
