Stories And Melodies With Doug Horn

As I wrap up 30 years of jazz radio at WEMU, what strikes me most about this job is the relationships:  with staff members, musicians and you.  A way to celebrate those relationships is to share the studio and time.  That is why I am inviting area musicians to be a “guest DJ” for an hour.  You will learn much about your favorite musicians as they share stories of the music and musicians that inspired them.  Case in point – today’s talk with saxophonist and flutist Doug Horn.

I was straight up about the friendship I have shared with Doug over the years as we began our all-too-short hour together, but I was surprised and delighted to hear new and fascinating Doug Horn stories.  I did not know about the sartorial taste of Doug’s high school band director, Doug’s short tenure as Yamaha’s saxophone and flute tester or his early fascination with the physics of the saxophone.  I did not consider the monotony of playing the same show over and over again on a cruise ship for magicians, jugglers, and unicyclists!  However, I did and do know about his gifts as a musician and melodic improviser.  If you are unfamiliar with Doug Horn, this talk with some of Doug’s favorite music and selections from his new CD High Standards is a great introduction. If you would like to experience Doug’s humor, wit and musical excellence live, please join WEMU at our free Sesi Motors 5:01 Jazz show Friday, October 6th at Rush Nightclub, 314 South Main Street in Ann Arbor.

Linda Yohn simply cannot remember a day in her life that was not filled with music. Her early life was full of changes as the daughter of a well-respected cancer research scientist who moved his family about, but one thing was constant: the love of music instilled by her mother. So, when it seemed life was too hard to bear, young Linda would listen to her radio, play her guitar, dance her heart out and sing at the top of her lungs. So, it isn’t so strange that “older” Linda still does all those things!
