Literature and the arts--collectively known as the humanities--are an essential part of our culture from a local to a global level.  In this week's "creative:impact," WEMU's David Fair and Arts Alliance CEO Deb Polich talk about how the humanities affect our world view and understanding with Amanda Krugliak, the arts curator and assistant director of arts programming at the University of Michigan's Institute for the Humanities.

Creative industries in Washtenaw County add hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economy.  In the weeks and months to come, 89.1 WEMU's David Fair and co-host Deb Polich, the President and CEO of The Arts Alliance, explore the myriad of contributors that make up the creative sector in Washtenaw County.   

About Amanda Krugliak

Amanda Krugliak is a visual artist, performance artist, and arts curator.  Her paintings have been exhibited and collected throughout California and the Midwest. She has performed her original monologues nationally most notably at NYU, SF Fringe festival, Chicago Links Hall, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.  In 2015, she curated the first serious exhibition of graphic memoirist Alison Bechdel. 

She has served as the University of Michigan’s Institute for the Humanities arts curator since 2007.  She has also consulted as a curator on campus-wide projects such as Stumbling Blocks, for the Bicentennial of the University (2017), Michele Norris's Race Card Project (2013), and Object Lessons (2017).  Her essay about the work of Richard Barnes was included in the 2017 book Object Lessons by U-M professors Kerstin Brandt and Carla Sinopoli, University Press, 2017.

State of Exception

The exhibition "State of Exception," which Krugliak co-created with artist Richard Barnes and U-M anthropologist Jason De León, was featured in the New York Times Magazine in 2013, won the Latina Spirit Award at ArtPrize 2015, and opened at Parson’s New School, NYC in 2017. 

"Literature Versus Traffic" Coming to Ann Arbor  

A guerilla-style art project that involves covering streets with books is coming to Ann Arbor.  Preperation for the event begins October 12th and the display goes live along Liberty Street in Ann Arbor on October 23rd.
