The Washtenaw Intermediate School District's $53.2 million-dollar bond passed in Tuesday's election with nearly 56% voter approval. The result will be a new High Point School in Ann Arbor that better serves the nearly 400 of the county's special needs students. District superintendent Scott Menzel joined WEMU's David Fair to discuss to discuss what happens next.
In the fall of 2021, it is expected there will be new classrooms and refurbished facilities at High Point School in Ann Arbor. Washtenaw County voters on Tuesday approved a $53.2-million-dollar bond issue put forth by the Washtenaw Intermediate School District. High Point serves students with special needs from all school districts in the county.
It will also create space for physical and occupational therapy. 14 of the new classrooms will be used by the Honey Creek Community School, which leases space at the building from the WISD.
WISD Superintendent Scott Menzel says they are in the final planning process of designs to build around the existing pool and gymnasium area.
Students at High Point and Honey Creek will be relocated after the holiday break in December. Menzel says the WISD is hoping to finalize an agreement with the Ypsilanti Community Schools in the next month, or so, to lease an unused building to house students until construction is completed.
Demolition is expected to begin in the 1st quarter of 2020 and it is expected the new High Point building will be ready for occupancy at the beginning of the 2021-2022 academic year.
