NPR Executive Editor Of News Talks About Sharing Credible News Relevant To People In Compelling Ways

National Public Radio Executive Editor of News Edith Chapin joins WEMU's Lisa Barry in-studio to talk about the importance of local news and the evolution of how news information is shared and consumed.

Edith Chapin says it is very important for people to know what's going on in their community and have access to credible local news, adding "it's what civic engagement is based upon."

In her over 30 years of journalism working for CNN and now NPR, Chapin says news today is about meeting the audience where they are and finding them in ways that is convenient to them.  She says it's no longer about appointment news, and that broadcasters should use all the platforms available to provide information in ways that is useful to listeners.

Chapin says content is most important when broadcasting and sharing news, adding "the secondary question is how it's received."

Chapin says what has been happening in local journalism is a "tragedy."  She says it's an important opportunity for public media is to do more community reporting in a highly credible manner.  She says public radio knits together local, national, and international news and shares it all in one place for public consumption--creating great "growth potential" for public media in the future.
