Ann Arbor’s city council hasn’t officially adopted the city’s community-wide carbon neutrality plan, but part of that plan is already in motion.
The Ann Arbor Solarize Program allows city staff to negotiate bulk installation deals with companies for local residents who’ve already selected an installer. Missy Stults is the sustainability and innovations manager for the city and says the more residents in a neighborhood want solar panels, the more savings they could see.
"Let’s say, it costs roughly $15,000, the federal tax incentive is 26% right now, so assuming you’re a tax paying entity, that’s about $3,900 that comes off of that asset. And then on top of that you get now our 15% savings if you participate in solarize."
City council has requested a funding framework for the plan but has given the green light to work on the solarize project to get residents interested in participating. The city hopes to reach community-wide carbon neutrality by the year 2030.
