Ypsilanti City Council Members Want Mayor Beth Bashert To Resign

City of Ypsilanti

Some Ypsilanti city council members are calling for Mayor Beth Bashert to resign after making a controversial comment last week.

Council Member Annie Somerville from the third ward is among those who want Bashert to step down.  Somerville attended a protest outside of city hall Monday afternoon demanding that the mayor resign from office after saying she would be crucified if she voted against appointing a black person to a city commission during a council meeting last Tuesday.  Somerville says it will be difficult to conduct city business with Bashert in office.

Council Member Somerville: It goes against everything that we’ve been working toward and the things that we are going to continue working toward. So, I don’t see how we can have honest conversations about race and equity.

Last week, the mayor said she would not resign from office, but she declined to be interviewed Monday afternoon.
