Ypsilanti Mayor Says She Will Not Resign

City of Ypsilanti
Mayor Beth Bashert

Some residents want Ypsilanti Mayor Beth Bashert to resign after making controversial comments during a city council meeting earlier this week.

Mayor Beth Bashert apologized for saying that she was going to be crucified if she voted against appointing a black person to a city commission.  She said her comment was racist but does not plan to resign.

Mayor Bashert: All I can do is ask for forgiveness, listen to what everybody has to say to me, and wait until they feel comfortable forgiving me.

But City Council Member Anthony Morgan from the third ward says there is no place for racism in municipal government.

Council Member Morgan: I do think people grow under fire. However, in these times, I think it would be a slap in the face to the progress that the citizens of Ypsilanti feel like we’re making to keep her on staff.

The groupSurvivors Speakplans to move forward with a recall if Bashert does not resign.
