Public Health And Education Are Expected To Be Top Issues In Michigan's 2021 Budget

Michigan State Senate
State Senator Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor)

Public health and education are expected to be two main components in the State of Michigan’s 2021 fiscal year budget that lawmakers will vote on later this week.

Eighteenth District State Senator Jeff Irwin of Ann Arbor says right now, it’s unknown if local health departments will receive additional funding for ongoing COVID-19 response.  Public school districts are expected to receive the same revenue sharing that they received this year.  Irwin explains why that’s not necessarily good news during a pandemic.

Senator Jeff Irwin: Many schools do have increasing costs, whether it’s from buying equipment and software to do virtual learning or whether it’s to buy more PPE, or other sanitation equipment, or the like for in-person learning, all of our schools are facing increasing costs due to COVID.

Irwin says he hopes the budget will also include additional funding to help the unemployed find jobs during COVID-19.
