Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders won Michigan in an upset during the 2016 primary.  That wasn't the case Tuesday as former Vice President Joe Biden won the vote in the state and in Washtenaw County.  Sanders still has support and a measure of hope.  18th District State Senator Jeff Irwin of Ann Arbor discussed what happened and what is to come as we move towards the November general election.  Irwin joined WEMU's David Fair today to discuss results and possibilities.

Former Vice President Joe Biden has won the state of Michigan and increased his delegate lead over Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, moving him closer to winning the democratic presidential nomination. Overall in Michigan, Biden earned nearly 53-percent of the democratic vote. Sanders earned over 36-percent. In Washtenaw County, it was closer . Biden garnered over 47-percent support to Sanders nearly 45-percent. With all county ballots counted, Biden received 2,711 more votes than Sanders.

18th District State Senator Jeff Irwin has formally endorsed Senator Sanders. He told WEMU he is disappointed with Tuesday;'s result, but not surprised. However small the chance may be, there are more primary elections to be held and Biden has not yet picked up enough delegates to secure the nomination. Irwin says that is why there is still hope for the Sanders campaign.

Should Biden get the nomination, Irwin says he should consider picking a female running mate and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer should receive consideration.
