Ypsilanti Sees An Increase In Drivers Speeding In Residential Neighborhoods

City of Ypsilanti

Drivers speeding in residential neighborhoods have become an issue for the City of Ypsilanti during the pandemic.

City Council Member Steve Wilcoxen from the second ward says the issue has been reported throughout all areas of the city.  It’s estimated that some drivers are going over 50 mph in 25 mph zones.  Wilcoxen says the city’s Department of Public Servicesand the city manager are trying to identify ways to address the issue to present to city council next month.

Council Member Steve Wilcoxen: There are people out walking the dogs, there are a lot more people on the street walking for exercise and being outside because it’s safe and social distancing. And it’s not just happening at night, it’s happening in the middle of the day.

Wilcoxen says thepolice department is aware of the issue but, due to limited resources, can’t focus on speeding surveillance.  However, they are issuing fines to drivers who get pulled over.  The city has not identified why more drivers are suddenly speeding through these areas.
