The Washtenaw County Elections Department has completed its task in the 2020 general election.  Every single vote has been counted, and many local races were decided.

Washtenaw County director of elections Ed Golembiewski took time after his busy night to speak with WEMU's Lisa Barry about the overall voter turnout, local election results, and keeping voters safe at the polls.

As of this past election night, Washtenaw County director of elections Ed Golembiewski reported that 100% of all ballots cast have been counted.  A record 217, 813 ballots were submitted, which accounted for about 68% of registered voters voting.  However, that percentage was not considered a record.

Still, this reflected an overall shift in voter trends, as many more residents submitted absentee ballots, mostly as some people are still being cautious during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Golembiewski noted that counting absentee ballots is much more "labor intensive."  Still, he was very pleased with how his election staff performed its duties and how voter safety was maintained.  Golembiewski kept in contact with local law enforcement at all times and was happy to say that no incidents of voter intimidation were reported.
