The Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office has announced it will not collaborate with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, also known as ICE. 89.1 WEMU's Taylor Pinson has more.
The decision is one of several included in a new comprehensive set of immigration policy guidelines issued by County Prosecutor Eli Savit on Wednesday. The guidelines also state that the prosecutor's office will not report noncitizen civilians, crime survivors, witnesses, or defendants to ICE.
Savit says noncitizens are less likely to report serious crimes if they think doing so will get them in trouble with immigration officials. He adds these new directives are about building trust between local law enforcement and the county's immigrant communities.
