There will be a special flag-raising ceremony outside the Washtenaw County administration building to recognize the Transgender Day of Visibility.

WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with Washtenaw County commissioner Jason Morgan about that.

The day is intended to recognize members of the transgender community and raise awareness of the discrimination they often face.

Washtenaw County commissioner Jason Morgan says he thinks that recognition is even more important this year.

Morgan says, "We need to make sure we are working with our community partners to not just recognize and celebrate transgender individuals but to serve and support them, so they know they have a chance to thrive in Washtenaw County."

Morgan says that transgender community members have been particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and believes it means a lot for people to know that Washtenaw County embraces and supports everyone in the community.
