Making the Invisible Visible" is one of several events coordinated by Arts Healing Within & Across Communities. We offer a non-judgmental, safe place to meet and mingle with others as we explore creative responses to violence (broadly defined) as it is witnessed and/or experienced within our environments (social, natural, and built) and the stories we have inherited.
Watch scenes from Panther in the Sky written by Chicago playwright Lani T. Montreal and engage in a community conversation about the issues in the play. Take time to network with others concerned about our community. Learn about how arts can be a form of memory, resilience, resistance, and healing.
We are reserving time for community sharing / open mic. Creatives who are interested in sharing work related to the theme "Making the Invisible Visible", can inform us using the registration form. Visual art, photography, music, dance, are welcome, along with works from writers and poets.
The event is free and made possible with funding from the UM Arts Initiative and Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention.

Sean Dobbins got his start as sought-after Detroit area jazz sideman at a young age, when he would regularly play with Blue Note artist Louis Smith. As Sean’s Career progressed, he found himself the recipient of many awards and accolades including the “Woody Herman Jazz Award”, an award for outstanding musicianship, as well as the Louis Armstrong Scholarship. Due to Sean’s great talent both as a player and an educator, he has been the focus of countless news articles, jazz radio programs, and documentaries.
Though still young by jazz standards, Dobbins has amassed an impressive list of playing companions. He has performed/toured/recorded with Marcus Belgrave, Rodney Whittaker, Paul Keller, Cyrus Chesnut, Marion Hayden, and a host of other great musicians.
Sean’s sound can best be described as hard-driving, solid rhythm with refreshing melodic sensibility. Some of Sean’s influences include Art Blakey, Jeff Hamilton, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Ed Thigpen, Sonny Payne, as well as Detroit area greats Gerald Cleaver and the one and only Elvin Jones.

Join the Connecting Chords Music Festival for a presentation of selected works from Duke Ellington's acclaimed Sacred Concerts. Participating artists include the Western Michigan University Jazz Orchestra, alto/mezzo soloist Tiffany Gridiron, and other area performers.
Duke Ellington's Sacred Concerts are a trilogy of extended musical compositions by the American jazz composer and bandleader. These performances were created between 1965 and 1973 as expressions of Ellington's faith through the fusion of jazz improvisation, big band orchestration, gospel vocals, choral elements and spiritual themes.
