The petition campaign to add LGBTQ protections to Michigan’s civil rights law was granted an extension to continue gathering signatures. Rick Pluta reports the Wednesday ruling came from a state Court of Claims judge.
The decision means Fair and Equal Michigan can still use signatures it had gathered before COVID-19 restrictions were ordered, and that it has time to gather more. But that won’t happen in time to qualify for the 2020 ballot. Fair and Equal Michigan co-chair Trevor Thomas says the campaign is still plotting how to resume its signature drive.
“We’re still in the game, and the Legislature is still on notice.”
If the drive succeeds, the Legislature could adopt the initiative, or it would go on the November 2022 ballot alongside candidates for the House, the Senate, as well as the governor and other statewide offices.
