This week, "Art and Soul" is about the art of well being. 89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with Zingerman's co-founder, speaker, and author Ari Weinzweig about sharing the wisdom from anarchist Emma Goldman to bring joy and creative purpose to our work and personal lives.
If you are a lover of anything Zingerman’s, you may be familiar with anarchism. Anarchism is the foundation of the philosophy behind Zingerman’s: creating a business committed to helping everyone it touches!
Emma Goldman has had a huge impact on how Zingerman’s operates. Ari Weinzweig has written a new pamphlet based on Goldman's philosophy called "Going Into Business With Emma Goldman: 18 Anarchist Lessons for Business and Life on the 150th Anniversary of Her Birth."
Weinzweig refers to the following quote from Goldman:⠀
“[Our] goal is the freest possible expression of all the latent powers of the individual . . . [which is] only possible in a state of society where man is free to choose the mode of work, the conditions of work, and the freedom to work. One to whom the making of a table, the building of a house, or the tilling of the soil, is what the painting is to the artist and the discovery to the scientist—the result of inspiration, of intense longing, and deep interest in work as a creative force.” — Emma Goldman, Anarchism and Other Essays
He talks about how the current "progressive business model" is very similar to what Goldman was talking about in the 1900's, including "the true function of an organization lies in personal development and growth."
