The City of Chelsea is working with the Washtenaw Area Transportation Study, also known as WATS, on a study to help improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
As part of the project called Chelsea Pop, crosswalks will temporarily be widened. Meanwhile, car lanes, that also serve as bike lanes, will be marked with bicycle images on existing pavement. The changes will take place along the Freer Road, Railroad, McKinley and Dewey Street corridor, east of M-52. Suzann Flowers is a transportation planner for WATS and says the goal is to see how pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists respond to the changes.
Suzann Flowers: The City of Chelsea identified this as a corridor of their concern, it’s also identified within their community master plan.
The project will roll out in September and be in place for 30 days. After that, the City of Chelsea will determine what changes need to be made to improve safety on their roads. To learn more about the project, click here.
