It won't be long before students of all ages start a new school year, but there's still a few things to do in the world of civic engagement.  WEMU's David Fair and the CivCity Initiative's Mary Morgan will talk about back-to-school preparations in the Ann Arbor area, as well as developments in Ann Arbor city business, in this week's "Civic Matters."

Mary Morgan brings a wealth of experience to the airwaves.  While heading up the CivCity Initiative now, Mary was previously co-founder and publisher of the Ann Arbor Chronicle.  Prior to that, she served as a reporter and editor for the Ann Arbor News when it was a daily, print edition newspaper.

This Week's Topics:

   • It's almost back-to-school time, and the Ann Arbor Public Schools board is gearing up with a retreat on Wednesday, Aug. 22.  It starts at 1 p.m. at the Sheraton Ann Arbor, 3200 Boardwalk Dr.  The agenda isn't yet posted, but one thing they might mention: New principals for four AAPS schools.

   • Speaking of back-to-school prep, the folks at UM's Voting Is Sexy project have created a checklist for returning students to make sure they're ready to vote in November.  Check it out here – it's useful for everyone.

   • On the public meeting front, this week's Ann Arbor City Council meeting is pushed back to Thursday due to the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Monday evening.  The meeting includes a report on how to increase citizen participation in the next budget process, among other items.  Click here for the full agenda.  The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 301 E. Huron.  You can watch on CTN Channel 16 and online here.

   • The City of Ann Arbor is adding to its management ranks with the recent hire of John Fournier as assistant city administration, a newly created position.  Starting in early September with a salary of $150,000, Fournier will be the city's ombudsman and point person for residential groups, among other responsibilities.  His current job is as director of on-street and metered parking for the Pittsburgh Parking Authority.
