About 100 K-12 students from Washtenaw County gathered at Eastern Michigan University on Friday to participate in a regional invention competition. 89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan was there and has the story.
Students explained their inventions at McKenny Hall as judges from the Henry Ford's Invention Convention listened closely. The competition allows students to work in groups of four to create an original product. Student Riley Goniwicha from Pioneer High School and his group created an alarm clock that gradually wakes you up in the morning using light instead of sound.
Riley Goniwicha: It's helping me to realize that engineering is something that I want to specialize in going into college and something to broaden out into later in life.
The winners of the regional competition at EMU will move on to a state championship in Dearborn later this year.
