There were 27 new cases of HIVamong Washtenaw County residents last year. Health officials want to curb HIV transmission by making testing more available.
70% of new HIV cases in Washtenaw County last year were in people under the age of 30. The Washtenaw County Public Health Departmentis offering free walk-in testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases to all county residents.
Public Health spokesperson Susan Cerniglia says education is vital to stopping HIV transmission.
“[It’s] really important about that testing, that education. Making sure you’re informed, make sure you know how to practice safer sex, and making that testing a routine part of health care.”
Today is National HIV Testing Day. Washtenaw County residents can get tested for free and without an appointment this Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday until noon at the Public Health Department in Ypsilanti.
