University of Michigan Health System Treating Coronavirus Patient

Mar 11, 2020

One of the two people from Michigan who tested positive for the coronavirus is an inpatient at the University of Michigan Health System and is in stable condition.  89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan has the story.

Both Michigan Medicine and the Washtenaw County Health Department are not confirming if the patient is being treated in Ann Arbor or at one of their other medical facilities.  Susan Cerniglia is a spokesperson for the health department and explains the exposure risk of both cases.

Susan Cerniglia: Does not necessarily present any risk of community exposure, any possible community exposure because they're in a healthcare facility.  This is what healthcare facilities do, this is their expertise to treat people and to prevent infection from spreading.

In a written statement, Michigan Medicine indicated that they're confident they're using proper precautions with the coronavirus patient who was carefully isolated to minimize the risk of exposure to their employees and patients.

The Washtenaw County Health Department continues to work with local hospitals to help prevent a coronavirus outbreak.
