Ypsilanti High School Art Students Unveil Two Murals Depicting Ypsi History

Lisa Barry

Several special ceremonies are planned for later this week in Ypsilanti, as two student-created art murals are unveiled.  They were created, curated, and funded by Ypsilanti High School art students.

89.1 WEMU'S Lisa Barry was there as they were recently installed.

The murals were created in panels by students at Ypsilanti Community High School under the direction of the school's art teacher Lynn Settles.

"This is about art.  This is about history.  This is about community.  This is about them feeling great about themselves," says Settles.

The first mural shows the Underground Railroad and represents the people who traveled to Ypsilanti and made their homes here.  It is being installed outside Growing Hope facing the back of the downtown district library.

Senior Maximilian Harper was there for the installation and says it's something he'll never forget.

"You can’t feel anyway but great, because it’s like, this is your legacy.  This is what I’m going to come back and show my kids one day," says Harper.

A second student-created mural will face the Ypsilanti Farmer's Market off Washington and was created to express the food and agriculture history in the area.  Two special community mural unveilings are planned for Friday, October 13th.
