1st Friday Focus on the Environment: Advancing Michigan's infrastructure
There has been an intensified effort to invest in Michigan’s infrastructure. Certainly, you’ve noticed all of the road and bridge construction. There is much more work on being done on various kinds of infrastructure. Zach Kolodin is the state's chief infrastructure officer and the director of the Michigan Infrastructure Office. He discussed the ongoing efforts with WEMU's David Fair and Michigan League of Conservation Voters executive director, Lisa Wozniak.

Issues of the Environment: Ann Arbor Mayor Taylor weighs in on dioxane plume Superfund designation
The Environmental Protection Agency recently announced that the Gelman Sciences 1,4 Dioxane plume has been added to the federal Superfund National Priorities List. After years of effort toward that end, it seemed as though the designation came suddenly and without notice. With a little time behind us now, we’re looking ahead to what’s next in the slow process of cleanup and accountability in a conversation between WEMU's David Fair and Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor.

Ernest Hemingway survived 2 plane crashes. His letter from it just sold for $237,055
The novelist and his wife survived successive crashes in Uganda in 1954. In the letter, Hemingway also describes shooting his first lion in Kenya with an old gun "held together with tape."
Issues of the Environment: Addressing challenges for farmers in Washtenaw County and the State of Michigan
Soaring fuel and fertilizer prices, the impacts of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and climate-related issues are making farming a greater challenge. There are more than 1,000 farms in Washtenaw County and, for many, the future is uncertain. WEMU's David Fair discussed agricultural challenges and solutions with MSU assistant professor and extension economist Mathew Gammans.

Washtenaw United: Closing the wealth gap for women and women of color
Historically speaking, women have been undervalued and have lacked equal opportunity and pay. As we mark Women's History Month, we explore the importance of being financially literate and articulate as the quest for equity and equality continue. Melissa Joy from Pearl Planning, in Dexter, joins WEMU's David Fair to discuss running a woman-owned business and helping prepare a generation of women for their financial futures.

Juneteenth is here. The occasion serves as a great opportunity to discuss where we’ve come as a community since the end of slavery and the significant work that remains ahead. Washtenaw United: Ypsilanti performer opening hearts and minds through drag performance
The fight for equality and inclusion for all continues. Nationally, there is an ongoing debate over "drag culture" and its impacts on community. As we begin to wrap up Pride Month, WEMU's David Fair spoke with the CEO of the Ypsilanti-based "Boylesque Michigan" drag troupe. Jadein Black discusses her personal mission and the nature of the troupe's mission to create greater diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Washtenaw United: Creating equity for the immigrant community in Washtenaw County
There are underserved portions of our community, and among them are newcomers to Washtenaw County. Immigrants make up an important part of the area's workforce but often struggle to gain a stable foundation on which to build a new life in our country and in our county. WEMU's David Fair talked about the efforts to welcome and support immigrants with Shrina Eadeh of Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County.

Washtenaw United: Ann Arbor's 2025 Golden Paintbrush Awards
Public art in Ann Arbor says a lot about the character and identity of the city. The Ann Arbor Public Art Commission chooses to celebrate those who add to that dynamic, and the Golden Paintbrush Awards is one of the ways it does that. The nominating periods for the 2025 awards will close on August 1st. WEMU's David Fair talked about public art—and the awards—with the commission’s special projects committee member, Sophie Grillet.
