Efforts to increase public transportation in Washtenaw County's urban core took another step forward last night. Ann Arbor City Council has approved a plan for Ypsilanti Township to join the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority. Council voted 11 to nothing in favor of the resolution last night.

Last month Ann Arbor City Council held off a vote on a resolution to approve adding Ypsilanti Township to the Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority.
The delay at the time was designed to give community members a chance to give feedback at a series of meetings planned by The Ride on the five-year transit improvement plan.
City Council member Stephen Kunselman says he heard nothing at the meetings he attended about membership concerns. Ypsilanti Township Clerk, Karen Lovejoy Roe says she's glad the delay resulted in a unanimous vote.
Other council members still had concerns about what are the qualifications to admit other communities to the AAATA would be, and funding equity. Roe however says the opportunities for economic development thanks to a greater commitment to public transit will help the entire area.
