Platt Road Site to be Springboard for Larger Affordable Housing Talks

Washtenaw County will be engaging neighbors of the old Juvenile Center on Platt Road in Ann Arbor and other community members to determine how to redevelop the site.  The County Commissioners have given final approval to a community driven process for planning for the 13.5 acre property.

Chair of the County Commissioners Yousef Rabhi says at the same time the county will be studying affordable housing issues.  He plans to host a summit on homelessness and housing.

Rabhi notes the county may lead the discussion on affordable housing but the issue is too large to be addressed without participation from everyone.

The Platt Road site is expected to include some affordable housing because it’s a requirement to be eligible for a state grant that is funding the redevelopment planning process.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
