A group of parents, union members, and others in the community continue to object to Ann Arbor Public Schools plan to outsource custodial work. Earlier this month the school board accepted a bid from GCA Services that will reduce custodial costs by $2 million annually.
It's an important piece of the proposed overall budget the board will consider Wednesday night.
Parent Rabindar Subbian thinks the district should let the current custodians form a worker co-op. He says the district would get the savings needed to address state funding issues while helping local middle class workers.
The workers were unable to complete plans in time to respond to the district's request for propsals. They are promised an interview with GCA to continue working in Ann Arbor schools.
