Washtenaw County is expanding its shelter services this winter. Starting in January the county will begin operating a second warming center.
The county's shelter services routinely exceeded their capacity last year, particularly during January-March.
Ellen Schulmeister is the Executive Director of the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County.
She says several local groups have offered to act as the site of the second center.
"We have three different churches, two that have been confirmed, one that's not confirmed yet, that are going to take it for 30 days," Schulmeister says. "And we will send the folks, along with our staff, to the church and just run another 50 people at the church site."
Schulmeister says the Delonis Center will be used as a shelter if additional space is needed before the plan is finalized.
