Ann Arbor Democratic Party Calls For Review Of Police Standards And Practices

Review is in response to nationwide concerns about police actions.

Ann Arbor Democrats are calling for improved communication, diversity and de-escalation training, video documentation, and mental health evaluations for officers. Chair of Ann Arbor's Democratic Party, Mike Henry, hopes Sheriff Jerry Clayton's, and Ann Arbor Police Chief John Seto's participation in the discussion is a good sign. Henry stated "at least the two of them, as law enforcement leaders, were pretty clear that they were willing to take responsibility for making sure there is some accountability there, with regards to those standards, and we hope the other agencies in the county do the same."

Henry expects to meet with elected officials across the county to push the reforms. He also plans to share the resolution with other Democratic groups across the state.

Like many, I first came to this area when I started school at the University of Michigan, then fell in love with the community and haven’t left. After graduating from U of M in the mid 1990’s I interned at WDET for several years, while also working a variety of jobs in Ann Arbor. Then in 1999 I joined the WEMU news team.
