More People Are Eating Healthier In Washtenaw County

WikiCommons

Some Washtenaw County residents are eating over half a cup more per day of fruits and vegetables thanks to a program called Prescription for Health.

St. Joseph Mercy Health System and the county's health department provided tokens to residents so they could exchange them for produce at farmers markets.

Ariane Reister, who is a health educator with the county, says offering free access to fruits and vegetables has motivated residents to think twice about what they eat.  The program also provides participants with recipes so they can start learning how to cook healthy meals.

285 low-income residents who suffer or are at risk of chronic disease were targeted last year.  The program will be offered again starting this June.
