Despite continuing efforts to making driving more safe for motorists, the number of traffic fatalities are on the rise in our state.

The number of traffic deaths in Michigan increased 10% in 2015, according to just-released data.  MelodyKindraka of the state Office of Highway Safety Planning breaks down the numbers locally.

"So there were 10,839 crashes in Washtenaw County in 2015, and it looks like there were 27 fatalities in the county."

The largest increase in traffic fatalities was among bicyclists up 57%.  Alcohol involved fatalities increased 28%.

The information will now be analyzed by the University of Michigan TransportationResearchInstitute to identify factors that may have played a role in the increases.
