Ann Arbor's 5th Ward City Council Candidates Meet In Debate
Candidates for Ann Arbor’s 5th Ward debated at the city’s Community Television Network studios last night.
City Council incumbentChuckWarpehoskiand challenger KevinLeeser touched upon a few controversial issues last night, including the recent deer cull, changing term limits for city council, and recycling.
Warpehoski says safety issues at a city recycling center could not be ignored by council members.
“And I’m a strong, again a strong environmentalist, I’m a strong supporter of recycling, but it needs to be done safely. And [city] staff did not feel that that core commitment to the safety of the workers in that plant, in that city-owned facility, was being upheld. I support the decision to protect the safety of the people working in that site.”
Leeser, a registered nurse at U-M Hospital, says recycling can work on a sound, fiscal basis.
“We gotta start thinking beyond, 'We have to hire a consultant to do this, we have to outsource to this.' We’re sort of our own ecosystem, our own machine. Let’s use our parts as ways to build ourselves better, instead of just, 'Well, we have to sell this or outsource this to another place.'”
