Women's March Events This Weekend In Washtenaw County

Lisa Barry
Ann Arbor's Women's March last year.

The Women's March returns again this year to Washtenaw County.  Events will be held in both Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

The Progressives at the University of Michigan group will host a rally, not a march, starting at 2:00 PM on Saturday at the Diag on campus.  Lead organizer Claire Cepuran says not much as changed from the last march when it comes to gender equality in the United States.

"This is just primarily, just trying to keep people going, trying to keep the momentum going, showing that no, our goals have not been reached. But we are not giving up, and we're going to continue bringing attention to these issues."

Meanwhile, also on Saturday, an Ypsi March for Love, Resilience, and Action will start at 12:30 PM at the Ypsilanti District Library branch on West Michigan Avenue.  Gentrification will be a focus at this event.

Desirae Simmons is one of the organizers.

"So one way that it could affect the community here is by making it too expensive for people who are currently here and who really care about Ypsilanti."

Both events will also feature voter registration.  Michelle Deatrick is the lead organizer for the Women's March Ann Arbor group.  They're helping organize the rally in Ann Arbor.

"People are understanding that it's not enough to just show up at a rally, that we have to make the phone calls, that we have to write the letters and we have to keep on doing that, day after day, as much as we can."

Parents are encouraged to take their children to both events.
