A Conversation With Local Advocate Of Civic Engagement Mary Morgan About Today's Elections

It is primary election day today across the country and in Washtenaw County.  89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry talks with the Executive Director of CivCity Initiativeand co-host of Civic Matters on 89.1 WEMU Mary Morgan about today's elections and how it's been going at local poling places.

Mary Morgan says she's been to several polling locations on this election day and what she is seeing, combined with what's being shared on social media, she believes there is the potential for record voter turnout for mid-term primary.

Morgan says this election cycle has been toxic with negative campaigning and believes voter turnout is being driven in part due to competitive races for mayor and all five wards of city council in Ann Arbor.  She says competitive races make voters feel more invested in an election and gives them more of a reason to get out to the polls.

Morgan says she believes the campaign rhetoric this election cycle has been nastier than she has ever seen it.  She says different candidates have different visions for the future of a community which gives voters more of a choice.  She says there are a lot of close races, and she doesn't feel confident predicting any outcomes at this point.  Adding, because there have been very vigorous campaigns and legitimate candidacies, that has been a good thing for voters, giving them more choices to vote for during this election.
