Washtenaw County In The Era Of #MeToo

A year has passed since the #MeToo movement brought more attention to sexual assault and harrassment.  WEMU's David Fair talks toSafehouse Centerexecutive director Barbara Niess-May and U of M law professor and former U.S. Attorney for the Eastrern District of Michigan Barb McQuade about how the movement has emboldened survivors and launched a conversation that will create positive change in the years to come.  

SafeHouse Center has seen a marked increase in survivors seeking help and support such as:

  • Since 2016, Sexual Assault Response Team calls to the hospital are up 61% just in these 8 months—on track to a 100% increase
  • In 2018, 50% increase in requests for shelter and for sexual assault services over 2017
  • 2017 calls for shelter:  1763,  2018 calls for shelter 2266 to date, up 29% in  eight months.
  • Counselors are increasing their caseload by 25% to meet the demand
