Eastern Michigan University held a Board of Regents meeting Thursday afternoon where members of the public continued to ask the board to reinstate four sports programs they eliminated this year. 89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan was there and has the story.
The Board of Regents did not respond to the requests. But after the meeting, EMU President James Smith said they will comply with a federal judge's order to fulfill Title IX requirements. Smith says that does not necessarily mean that the women's tennis and softball teams that were eliminated earlier this year will be reinstated.
“I think the judge would say its all about compliance. What compliance strategy would you use? A nd compliance in the NCAA's mind is that women's athletics would equal the population of students on your campus or mirror the population on your campus,” said President Smith.
Men's wrestling and swimming and diving were also eliminated as a result of budget issues.
