Candidate Info: Carrie Hanshaw, South Lyon Community Schools Board of Education

Melissa Samluk

WEMU offered the opportunity for any candidate appearing on a ballot in Washtenaw County in the 2018 general election to submit a campaign message directly to our audience. Carrie Hanshaw is running for South Lyon Community Schools Board of Education as a nonpartisan.  What follows are the audio and remarks the candidate wanted to share with you.

Hello, my name is Carrie Hanshaw and I am running for a two year partial term on the South Lyon Community Schools Board of Education.  I am an incumbent, finishing up my first six year term.  I have been a resident of Lyon Township for 14 years and have two children in the South Lyon school district.

I hold both a Bachelors and a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Michigan. I worked at Ford Motor Company before making the decision to stay home with my children full time. I served on the Special Education Advisory Committee, a state advisory panel to the State Board of Education and the Michigan Department of Education. In my time on the SLCS Board of Education I have acted as Board Secretary for almost four years.  I have also earned the Certified Board Member Award and the Award of Merit from the Michigan Association of School Boards. I was also a founding member of the South Lyon Educational Foundation.

In my first term on the SLCS Board of Education we have:
*Added paraprofessionals to better support student medical needs
*Added School Resources Officers in our secondary schools and increased security
*Offered $100 teacher stipends for classroom needs
*Added more advanced placement classes, high school & middle school electives, and junior Kindergarten
*Improved discipline strategies to include restorative practices and community service options
* Passed a $64.4 million bond and opened a new elementary school
* Developed a five year strategic plan
* Produced a fiscally responsible balanced budget even as the lowest funded district in the state

I have decided to run for SLCS Board of Education again to continue my work in the district.  As the current senior member of the board, I would be a valuable mentor to the new members on the board.  I am also committed to finding new opportunities for non-college bound students.  My experience with the growth of the district will also be valuable in planning for the future leveling of enrollment.  Thank you for your consideration.
