Gretchen Whitmer is only the second female governor in Michigan history, and, as the mother of two daughters, knows the importance of strong female leaders.
She spoke to 89.1 WEMU's Lisa Barry about improving history for women during this month dedicated to highlighting the contributions of women in history and contemporary society.
Gretchen Whitmer is making history during Women's History Month as Michigan's second female governor out of 49 state leaders.
She says she made sure her staff and cabinet included a lot of females and encourages other women to run for office to give more representation in the arena of impactful decision-making.
She says there are a lot more women leaders in Michigan state government right now helping give voice to women's concerns.
Governor Whitmer mentions the discussion and news coverage that followed about what she wore when delivering her first State of the State address and says, as a mother of two daughters, there is a lesson to be learned in reacting to the mean and negative comments people make using social media.
The governor says women need to elevate and empower each other and says the issue of pay inequality for women is an issue that still needs to be resolved.
