EMU Board Of Regents Approves Contract Extension With AAUP

Eastern Michigan University's Board of Regents approved a contract extension Tuesday afternoon with The American Association of University Professors, also known as the EMU AAUP.  89.1 WEMU's Jorge Avellan has the story.

The new, two-year contract will provide a 1.7% pay increase for professors during the 2019-2020 school year and a 1.6% increase for the following year.  Union members will have to pay an additional 7% for medical benefits.

AAUP President Judith Kullberg says, lately, collective bargaining agreement negotiations at many universities have lasted a couple of years, so they decided to do an extension, rather than a whole new contract.

"Faculty working without contracts, with strikes, et cetera.  And we wanted to avoid all of that," said Kullberg.

EMU PresidentJames Smith says their relationship with the union is improving.

"I think the union recognizes that we're not flushed with cash and, therefore, what would be a cost of living type of increase," said President Smith.

The contract extension will impact about 630 union members.Non-commercial, fact based reporting is made possible by your financial support.  Make your donation to WEMU todayto keep your community NPR station thriving.
