In an effort to highlight the common good that can be found in the world and demonstrate what can be done to help each other, Ann Arbor police sergeant Jaime Crawford donated a kidney to fellow officer Steven Dye several months ago. The police department colleagues talk with WEMU's Lisa Barry about their journey and what lead to the procedure after working together for some 20 years.
After working together in the Ann Arbor Police Department for 20 years, Sgt. Jaime Crawford found out her colleague on the force, Officer Steven Dye, was experiencing a problem with his kidney and faced dialysis and other health complications. She offered to be tested to see if she was a possible match for a live kidney donation, and it turns out she was.
After much testing and counseling, they underwent the procedure in March of 2019. Both Ann Arbor police officers are now back on the job, while Dye still undergoes weekly testing to make sure all is well with his new kidney.
Sgt. Crawford says she was surprised at how much reaction and positive feedback their situation has garnered. She said she did it to show we can do so many things to help other people and as a way to demonstrate that we can "be good to others, find common ground and help each other out."
