1st Friday Focus On The Environment: Working To Mitigate The Damage Of CAFO's In Michigan

Concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs, are areas where livestock are kept and fed indoors.  One cow will produce 20 times the waste as a human and large-scale operations have thousands of these animals.  The liquified waste is kept in pools, sprayed on the land, and ultimately runs off into the waters.  That contributes to phospherous overload and the development of algal blooms.  Pam Taylor is a Research Coordinator for the Environmentally Concerned Citizens of South-Central Michigan (ECCSCM) and discusses the issues and work toward better practices with WEMU's David Fair and Michigan League of Conservation Voters executive director Lisa Wozniak in this month's "1st Friday Focus on the Environment."
