Congresswoman Debbie Dingell says she looks forward to going into the New Year and next decade with "civility and hope." Dingell said she didn't want to politicize President Donald Trump's recent comments about her following her pro-impeachment vote and her late husband John Dingell. The congresswoman talked with WEMU's Lisa Barry about the past year both politically and personally.
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell told WEMU's Lisa Barry she thinks 2019 was one of the most divisive years she's ever seen in this country in her entire life. She said she would like us to remember that we are Americans first and to respect each other. She said she views the impeachment of Donald Trump in the house as "one of the saddest days in our country's history" but added "those of us who have taken an oath of office have a responsibility to protect the country's constitution, national security and democracy."
Going into the new year, Congresswoman Dingell said she would like everyone to remember that compromise isn't a dirty word and hopes to get many things accomplished in Congress, including lowering the cost of prescription drugs. Even though she said she would not ask President Trump for an apology after suggesting the late John Dingell may not be in heaven, she did say "because the president crossed the line, she hopes her Republican colleagues in Congress may ask him to be more civil." And she said there may be a lesson for everyone from what the president said while visiting Michigan, for us all "to take a deep breath and think about the words we say, and try to be a bit nicer to each other."
